A hidden leak is the quietest expensive problem in a home. It runs around the clock, raising your water bill and slowly softening the wood, drywall and flooring around it. Because the pipe is buried in a wall, under a slab or underground, the damage is often well advanced before anything is visible.
The good news is that hidden leaks almost always leave clues. Learn to read them, and you can turn a major repair into a small one.
1. Your Water Bill Suddenly Jumps
A rising bill with no change in how you use water is the classic first clue. It is also the easiest to confirm: shut off every fixture in the house and check the meter. If the dial keeps moving, water is escaping somewhere. Our leak detection service is built for exactly this.
2. Damp, Warped or Stained Surfaces
Discolored patches on a ceiling, bubbling paint, or a floor that feels soft or warped all point to moisture behind the surface. In a water line leak, the stain often grows over days.
3. A Musty or Mildew Smell
Persistent musty odors - especially in a bathroom, closet or basement that has no obvious water source - usually mean damp material is growing mold inside a wall or under a floor.
4. The Sound of Running Water
If you hear water moving when every fixture is off, a supply line is leaking. This is one of the most reliable signs, and it is worth investigating immediately.
5. A Warm Spot on the Floor
A warm patch on a concrete slab often signals a hot-water line leak beneath it - what plumbers call a slab leak. It is a strong clue because it points to both the leak and roughly where it is.
6. Cracks or a Shifting Foundation
Water under a foundation can wash away soil and cause new cracks in walls, floors or the slab itself. At that stage, the leak is doing structural damage. For a leak in the main supply, our water main repair team handles it.

How Professional Leak Detection Works
Finding a hidden leak is not guesswork. We combine several tools to pinpoint the source with as little disruption as possible:
- Meter and pressure testing to confirm a leak exists and which system it is on
- Acoustic listening to pick up the sound of escaping water
- Thermal imaging to reveal temperature changes from hot or cold line leaks
- Line tracing to mark the exact repair point underground or in a slab
With the location marked, the repair becomes a targeted, small fix instead of exploratory demolition.
Don't Wait for the Leak to Announce Itself
Leaks get more expensive the longer they run. If high water pressure is part of the problem, we can also check and correct it - see our water pressure repair service to protect your pipes from stress.
